The Quilters of India · Dehradun, since 2003

Every patch holds a story.

Appliqué, patchwork and hand quilting from the Himalayan foothills. Each quilt is handmade and signed by its artisan.

Made at the workshop

Off-cuts in. Heirlooms out.

Every detail you see is a result of hands-on craftsmanship. Every motif is thoughtfully cut, placed, and stitched by our Didis, using fabrics carefully sorted into colour families on our shelves.

Appliqué, in eleven steps

01

Design

Every motif starts as a drawing.

02

Template

The drawing is scaled to size and cut into a reusable template.

03

Colour selection

Fabrics are chosen from shelves sorted into colour families.

04

Tracing on fabric

The template is traced onto the chosen off-cut.

05

Motif cutting

Each motif is cut out by hand.

06

Appliqué setting

Pieces are laid out and placed on the base fabric.

07

Appliqué stitching

Each motif is stitched down by hand.

08

Quilting

The layers are quilted together, by hand and on the machine.

09

Finishing

Edges are finished and the Purkal label goes on.

Patchwork

Off-cuts, joined block by block.

Off-cuts are joined using geometric templates to make patchwork patterns like our favourite log cabin, ring of star, spinning wheel & many more!

Meet the Didis

The hands behind every quilt.

Our artisans are called Didis, elder sisters. Training takes months across appliqué, patchwork, embroidery and hand quilting, and many of our senior Didis now train and quality-check others.

Look for her name on the back.
